Grand Tour

Why Choose the Grand Tour?

The Angkor Grand Tour takes you beyond the famous Angkor Wat and Bayon, introducing you to temples with unique histories, stunning artistry, and peaceful settings. Perfect for history enthusiasts and those seeking a more comprehensive exploration of Angkor.

Morning:

Preah Khan (7:00 AM – 8:30 AM)

  1. Built by King Jayavarman VII in the late 12th century, Preah Khan was a Buddhist monastery and a center of learning. It served as a temporary residence for the king while Angkor Thom was under construction. Its name, meaning “Sacred Sword,” refers to a legendary weapon believed to have protected the kingdom. The temple features long corridors, intricate carvings, and tree roots entwined with its ruins.

    Neak Pean (9:00 AM – 9:45 AM)

This small temple, built by King Jayavarman VII, is located on an artificial island in the middle of the Jayatataka Baray (reservoir). It was designed as a place of healing, with four surrounding pools symbolizing the elements—water, earth, fire, and wind. Its name means “Entwined Serpents,” referring to the naga sculptures at its base.
    Ta Som (10:15 AM – 11:00 AM)
Constructed in the late 12th century by King Jayavarman VII, Ta Som was dedicated to his father. This compact temple features beautiful carvings and a famous eastern gate engulfed by a massive strangler fig tree, symbolizing nature’s reclamation of human-made structures.
    East Mebon (11:30 AM – 12:15 PM)
Built in the 10th century by King Rajendravarman II, East Mebon was originally located on an island in the now-dry East Baray reservoir. It honored the king’s ancestors and the Hindu god Shiva. The temple is adorned with detailed carvings and large sandstone elephants standing at its corners.

Lunch Break (12:15 PM – 1:15 PM):

  • Enjoy a traditional Khmer meal at a nearby restaurant while soaking in the serene surroundings.

Afternoon:

Pre Rup (1:45 PM – 2:30 PM)

Pre Rup, built in the 10th century during the reign of King Rajendravarman II, is a mountain-style temple dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. Its name, meaning “Turning the Body,” is believed to reference a cremation ritual, although this is debated. Constructed primarily of laterite, brick, and sandstone, Pre Rup’s warm hues are particularly striking at sunset. Visitors will notice the temple’s tiered design, symbolizing Mount Meru, and its intricate carvings that depict scenes from Hindu mythology.

Kravan Temple (3:00 PM – 3:30 PM)

Constructed in the 10th century under King Harshavarman I, Kravan Temple is a small yet elegant Hindu monument known for its unique brickwork. Unlike many other temples in the Angkor complex, Kravan features exquisite bas-reliefs directly carved into its brick walls. The central tower depicts Vishnu in various forms, including scenes of him riding Garuda and subduing demons. Its compact layout and artistic details make it a peaceful stop for visitors seeking an intimate glimpse into Angkorian art and devotion.
